One of the biggest issues surrounding HIV is the stigma attached to the disease. Not only do you have the association of homosexuality but also with other risky behaviors such as injection drug use and promiscuity. It’s true that many people who are infected have been exposed to HIV through homosexual relationships and drug use, but many women have been exposed through heterosexual relationships in which they had unprotected sex because they felt they were not at risk.
Once diagnosed with HIV, you carry the stigma of AIDS-related discrimination leading to prejudice, negative attitudes, abuse and maltreatment. These individuals are being shunned by family, friends and the community. Some feel they are treated unfairly in healthcare and educational settings. It is important, especially in healthcare, not to judge people for their beliefs and lifestyle. Stigma is the main reason why so many people are afraid to get tested or even to seek treatment. Because of the fear of social disgrace, AIDS becomes the silent killer.
Awareness and Education of the public is the best defense against this devastating disease. For more education on this disease and the stigma behind it, visit our website at http://www.raise-nwmo.org/.
